Today's Review: Honey Monster Puffs

Sugar Puffs are a national institution. They're one of those classic breakfast cereals, alongside the Coco Pops, Rice Krispies and Weetos, and their iconic Honey Monster is most definitely in my top five favourite cereal mascots. But apparently Sugar Puffs are no more, they are now "Honey Monster Puffs". I think this name has been a thing for a while, in response to backlash from people who take issue to the word "Sugar" being in the title. Won't somebody please think of the children?! Apparently just changing the name but keeping the sugar content the same wasn't enough, as we now have a new recipe! But does new always mean better? Well, no, because they've taken out 25% of the sugar.

Now, normally, I wouldn't see reduced sugar as a bad thing, especially if it's done right. But this is a product whose very name relied on the existence of sugar, and now there's a sugar deficit, and it shows. These are, in essence, the same puffs, the texture and base flavour is the same. The honey and sweet sugar flavour is present as well, but not for long. After a few chews the sweetness abandoned me, and I was left chewing flavourless puffs, ready for the next spoonful that would inevitably disappoint me again. These aren't nice, they've ruined Sugar Puffs for everyone. I know it was for the children, but what about my inner child? Can't they leave Sugar Puffs around for adults like me who know the consequences of eating spoonfuls of sugar for breakfast? Can they not co-exist with Honey Monster Puffs, for parents who want to mindlessly snatch boxes off the shelf with little regard for nutritional content, then complain later that actually these are quite bad, and they probably should have gone for Shredded Wheat?

These didn't even make my wee smell. Everything we loved about Sugar Puffs is gone. For shame. For shame.

My rating: 1/5

  4. Pappy unpleasant things. I've bought them now and again over many years to cheer me up when I'm suffering from a cold / flu. But clearly they've changed the recipe since the last time. I shaln't buy any more, and I doubt I'll finish this packet. Nothing attractive about them. What a shame - ruined them!

  13. Just tracked these down... and wished we hadn't. Mealy, hard lumps that don't even float. Yuk! We have also thrown them in the bin. Looks like childhood memories will have to stay just that. The only survivor now are Frosties but perhaps Tony the Tiger's days are also numbered...

  14. Childhood cereal ruined, what have you done to them! Craving them not that long ago bought a box also noticing the design has changed following the name and went home to a bowl of shit. For one they look lifeless and actually taste of nothing. Gonna see a big drop in your sales if you don't bring the recipe back! Everything that was good before is all changing. Never buying a box again. Killing the sugar puff monster in my dreams

  15. Sugar Puffs = Bumble Bees

Honey Monster Puffs = Dead withered bees.

Tasteless and disgusting; I'd rather eat the box they're packaged in.

  19. I must join with the throng. I had a sudden craving for a breakfast treat, had enough of sawdust, so I was perturbed when I couldn't find the sugar puffs, but then saw the friendly face of the honey monster. Ah, okay they've had to take the name sugar off them, okay, but they won't have changed the product, will they? How wrong I was, one bowl of this tasteless muck, and the rest went out to the birds. BRING BACK SUGAR PUFFS, I'LL HAPPILY PAY MY SUGAR TAX!!

  20. I too would happily pay the sugar tax on Sugar Puffs as they were, I think we lovers of this scrumptious breakfast cereal should start a sugar puff revolution, let Kelloggs know how we lovers of the old product feel, GIVE US BACK OUR ORIGINAL SUGAR PUFFS, I for one am getting sick and tired of being told what I should or shouldn't eat, by a bunch of cretins.

    1. They ruined Sugar Puffs for good after Jamie Oliver spouted his vast knowledge that they were bad for our children's health . Funny I've managed to get to 73 years of age. I used to love the crunchy caramelised bits at the end of the bag with a dash of cream. Oh well I'll have to have Porridge with caster sugar on it untill some other Twat decides to ban Sugar entirely. The thing to do and I wish I had is to clean your teeth regularly. cite Pam Ayres peom "I wish I'd looked after me teeth"

  24. do not like them bring back old ones

  25. EVERYONE LISTEN!!!! If u go buy any shops own brand honey puffs you'll find they taste and texture is more like the original. It's the same with coco pops. Any shops own brand( morrisons asda tesco) have way more chocolate on them. I'd you dont believe me go buy Kellogg's coco pops and Asda's own coco snaps and the own brand are much darker cos they have more chocolate. I worked this out years ago and kellogs charge stupid prices when paying much less gets you better quality.

  26. Even Aldi ones are much better than these.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I was craving some sugar puffs so I went to the Asda and bought a box and I wish I hadn't.
what the hell is in that box because it wasn't what I was craving for they are nasty and I will just have to look for a substitute because I won't be buying them again 😷🤢🤢

  34. Every thing they say is true ,crap.have to go in bin disgusting.

  35. Imagine being dictated to as to what you can and can't eat. They have destroyed Sugar Puffs. I would have bought at least a box per week of the old recipe for the past 8 years since the rebrand. Multiply that by 1000s of others that feel the same. That's a lot of lost profits and unhappy breakfasts.
